Day Drive to Payson
An array of British, German, Italian, and American metal were lined up, shining and idling in front of Van Horssen Group, ready for their drivers. The Aston Martin DB9 Volante, BMW M Roadster, Porsche 997 Turbo, Lamborghini Gallardo and Corvette Z06 couldn’t have been more different from each other, yet all seemed like the perfect car for a leisurely drive to Payson, Arizona.
After a little coffee, route intro and trying to pawn off the radar detector I am not supposed to use or condone, we jumped in the cars and were off. There’s something about starting a group drive where the adrenaline and excitement kick in and I just feel like I should go fast. Everyone else felt the same but thanks to speed cameras we didn’t push it too much.
That is until we were on the open highway were you could start to feel what the car can do. I was driving the Z06 and although I admittedly am not too impressed with the overall finish of the car, it drives incredibly well at high speeds. It seemed the Gallardo, Aston and Turbo had little trouble keeping up too, even the M Roadster kept pace.
As we became more comfortable with the cars, we probably started pushing them further than most American traffic laws would allow, but being cautious and skilled drivers everyone faired well and by the time we rolled into Payson everyone was ready for a break. We stopped at a great steakhouse for lunch and good conversation and a few laughs before heading back.
